At this moment every gamer worth his salt is drooling over the first installment of the fourth generation in the GTA franchise. This game is simply an exhilarating experience right from the start. Having played the other titles in the series it came to me as a fresh breeze that this one is seriously focused on the playability issue and delivers hours of pure adrenalin pumped fun. It is not easy for a game to score consistently right around the 10/10 mark all across the gaming community and this feat was followed by the record sale of 6 million copies of the title in its first week. After a worldwide release on 29th April 2008 the record sales sums up to more than 500 million dollars in the first 7 days.

The game play unwinds at Liberty City – a city modeled out of the modern day New York City– and it takes a fresh look by cutting out all the fancy vehicles and weapons that its predecessor GTA: San Andreas had on offer. Liberty City in GTA 4 has little resemblance with the Liberty City appearing in GTA III. What make GTA 4 one of the very best games ever to happen, even after the skinning down of the weapons, vehicles and other nifty features is the realism and the life like world which is present inside the game. Detailing is given an obsession like importance and this can be experienced in every pixel through which you see the Liberty City. On the Xbox 360 on which we unleashed GTA 4 the game world was literally brimming with life and the level of detail was awesome.

What is GTA 4

Image

Following suit as of its forerunner titles, GTA 4 is an Open-Environmental third-person shooter and driving game. The whole space of Liberty City is open for the player to explore and interact with and the player can move around inside the city just as if you can do in any normal city – you can do what ever you like – walk, run, jump over obstacles, use weapons and hit people, steal any kind of vehicles (hmm we seem to have deviated from the normal way of life in a city) and can on with mission objectives at the leisure. There is no compulsion of following the mission parameters – following them and successfully finishing them will advance you through the game by unlocking more missions, but this is not imperative – and that is where all the fun begins. This puts you in a position to play the game as you wish and promises hundreds of hour’s worth of quality gaming experience.

Image

You can be a slick assassin and carry on with the mission objectives with the slightest of fuss and attraction from the authorities in the game and can successfully advance through the game stages. Or you can opt to be the brutal thug and cause virtual mayhem in Liberty City, of course at the expense of attracting some of the superior quality AI driven opposition from the authorities inside the game. The more you becomes a menace to the sanity of the city – this can be easily achieved by committing a series of offences ranging from petty mugging to highly serious offences – the more active will be the opposition from the authorities and all the things you choose to do will have an impact on the plot of the game.

Story Line

Image

The plot of the game revolves around Niko Bellic – a Serbian immigrant who comes to Liberty City by the influence of his cousin named Roman. Roman makes Niko to believe that by coming to Liberty City he will be able to enjoy the high life Roman was enjoying. Nico who is a wounded soul coming from war torn Serbia, finds that Roman was lying about the wealth and all and is under financial trouble.

Niko helps Roman to settle some debts he has with some of the local bosses and this opens the path of Contract killing for Niko and being a war veteran himself he takes on to the crime world in Liberty city as if a duckling to water. As Niko Bellic the lead character, you are given missions of various difficulty levels and finishing one leads to the next. You are made to guide Niko through the complex yet highly interesting story line, and will find that the hard lined Niko is actually a man torn between feelings and he is ready to go to any extreme to escape from the haunting past.

  • Naughty Dog considered new Jak & Daxter game, but decided on The Last of Us

Before deciding on the post-apocalyptic survival adventure The Last of Us, Naughty Dog considered putting its team to work on a game starring a more familiar duo: Jak & Daxter. According to a Game Informer interview (quoted by VG247), Naughty Dog looked into a new Jak & Daxter game on PS3. “I don’t know if this is going to make [fans] happy or sad,” but we did explore the idea fairly extensively,” company co-president Evan Wells said. “Something that we talked about early on was, ‘Lets go back and apply what we’ve learned with the Uncharted games to Jak & Daxter.’”

Wells and the team realized, however, that an experimental Jak game wouldn’t satisfy the fans, and working on a game like its predecessors wouldn’t satisfy Naughty Dog. “We would end up limiting the direction that the company had this passion for while simultaneously not creating the game that fans wanted,” he said. “We just realised we were going to just do everybody a disservice. So at that point, the conversations started to move in a new direction.”

Wells suggested the possibility that the Uncharted team could work on the series. “I guess there’s a possibility the Uncharted team could move on to Jak & Daxter. “It’s still up in the air, but I wouldn’t think that’s going to happen because I think we’d run into all of the same problems with that team that we did with this team.”Naughty Dog considered new Jak & Daxter game, but decided on The Last of Us originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 09:30:00 EST.
